Pin This Image! Did you know, Shula's Steakhouse is owned by former football coach Don Shula? As the head coach of the Miami Dolphins, “the team he led to two Super Bowl victories and the only perfect season in the history of the National Football League” (Wikipedia). Located in Hyatt Regency Downtown Houston, Shula’s Steakhouse just revamped their menu and I attended a wonderful private tasting dinner event. Chef Demetrio Zavala did a wonderful job because there was food galore at the dinner tasting party and we all left with full happy bellies (not bloated at all). Every single dish, including desserts, were healthy, mouth-watering and delicious. I want to share them with you so you can check them out and also enjoy their new menu items. I was surprised how spacious their steakhouse was. Owned by an American professional football coach and former player, the steakhouse is decked with sports art on the walls which is a lovely and unique touch! Don't you think? And with the wood design, black chairs and white table cloth, it is classy at the same time. Below left is the back room at Shula's Steakhouse where we had our media preview dinner party. Had a great honor chatting with Chef Demetrio Zavala and listening about his journey becoming a talented chef. Did you know he made it to the final round of Food Network's "Chopped" tournament to compete against Bobby Flay, the renowned American chef for Mesa Grill? How awesome is that? (You can watch the episodes on October 27th at 9/8 Central.) Starters are Wagyu Beef Meatballs, New Orleans BBQ Shrimp, Wedge Salad, Tuna Tartare, Maryland Jumbo Lump Crab Cake, and Lobster Bisque. It was difficult for me to choose my top favorite because all of them were tasty in their own ways. Wagyu Beef Meatballs with parmesan, whipped ricotta, and basil persillade. Persillade is a seasoning mixture with parsley, garlic, herbs, oil and vinegar. The parmesan and ricotta blended together well and gave us a wonderful cheese pull. New Orleans BBQ Shrimp has lemon, olive oil, and garlic crostini. The shrimp was firm and perfectly cooked. The garlic crostini went well with the BBQ shrimp. Wedge Salad has apple wood smoked bacon and blue cheese. You can also opt in for vinaigrette instead of blue cheese. (But try it with the blue cheese... it's incredible). The apple wood smoked bacon bites were sweet which was a nice touch. I don't like bacon but these were not greasy but more like a jelly form. You need to give this wedge salad a go! Tuna Tartare has soy, radish, avocado, ginger. The tuna tartare is on a spicy side which was a surprise but it's the good amount of spiciness where you will enjoy. Make sure to eat it together with the chili wontons, the flavor and texture makes it even better! Maryland Jumbo Lump Crab Cake with avocado and watercress. They all go well together and the lump crab cake was so soft and palatable. Lobster Bisque has croutons, lobster chunks, cream, and chives. Lobster Bisque is my go-to when I go to a restaurant since they never go wrong! You only see the lobster here in the photos but check out my Instagram @clairebearblogs to see the video of it! Entrée follows Half Chicken with pomme puree, spinach, Sherry Chicken Jus, Seared Scallops, Prime NY Strip and Dry-Aged Bone in Ribeye. The seared scallops with saffron, fennel creamed corn, and lemon gremolata was rich in flavor and the prime NY strip was juicy. Dry-aged bone was interesting and new for me. Have you tried it? The sauces were chimichurri, blue cheese butter, and truffle butter. Make sure you try chimichurri sauce with the steak, it's the best! The Garlicky Kale with almonds and parmesan, Cream Corn with black truffle and Hash Browns with caramelized onions and thyme for sides. You could probably eat Garlicky Kale and other sides for appetizers since the portion is good. The Hash Browns are well seasoned which you have to taste. For desserts, warm doughnuts with caramel, chocolate sauce and creme anglaise, chocolate lava cake and seasonal fruit with mint, lime and raspberry sorbet. My favorite was the raspberry sorbet with kiwi, blueberry and strawberries - so refreshing! Warm doughnuts were so soft and went well with the sauces. Do you see the chocolate coming out from that lava cake? So bomb. I'm planning to take my family to this steakhouse! Who would you take and which dish are you going to try?
