Here's something you can look forward to next week. Understory Houston’s Grand Opening is from August 12th through 18th. During this grand opening week, they will spotlight each vendors and you get to taste their specials, food samples, coffee infused cocktails by Boomtown Coffee, brunch from Tastemakers and enjoy live band, yoga and DJ mixes! After spending my day exploring around Houston downtown Understory food hall, here's a local travel guide I made just for you!
Located in 800 Capitol St, right under downtown Houston’s Bank of America Tower, Understory is a public space and dynamic hub. This food hall is changing downtown Houston food scene with local and upcoming restaurants. See below.
A well-known coffee shop in Houston due to their tasty and flavorful coffee and friendly service. Boomtown Coffee has two other locations, one in Heights and one in downtown. Tried their Sea Turtle, an iced latte with chocolate and caramel, and it was pretty good! Kept me awake and focused.
Have you tried this sandwich shop in Houston? They have another location in Uptown. It’s cool how their menu is written, focused on proteins you want in your sandwich and it’s easy to understand. Aside from their sandwiches, East Hampton Sandwich has entree salads, soups, and sides like pasta and fries.
This brick and mortar restaurant serves Filipino-inspired gourmet Akaushi burgers.
This will be their first location in Understory and they are planning to open more locations in Houston. Their main menu will include Mexican street-style tacos, Mexican sandwiches and traditional Tex-Mex dishes. You will also see some familiar dishes from The Original Ninfa’s on Navigation.
This fast-casual restaurant is perfect to create your own Italian dish. First, choose your base, then, choose farm fresh ingredients, choose your sauce, upgrade (if you’d like) for extra proteins and finally season it. You also have a variety of food choices like salads, pastas and paninis.
This would be Seaside Poke's second location. Here, you build your own poke bowl just like other poke bowl places in Houston! All of their ingredients are locally sourced and their menu is island inspired. Their poke bowl is actually really delicious, you should totally try! Feel free to check out their merchandise.
Guess what? A new cocktail bar is coming to Houston. If you see the most vibrant space with colorful art and tree area right when you come down, this is the Silver Lining Bar! Love all the colors, artworks, and space design here.
Do you know which architecture firm developed Understory? It’s designed by renowned Michael Hsu Architecture Firm. If you haven't heard of them, they have done so many projects in Houston such as Mercantile Heights, Local Foods, Uchi, as well as in Austin and many other cities. All of their interior design work is contemporary and aesthetic! Love what they did with the spaces in Understory. Check out more beautiful restaurants in Houston.
Aside from the culinary aspects, Understory boasts many art pieces! If somebody asked you to describe Houston in three words, what would they be? My answer would be food, art and diversity. It's so true because look how diverse Houston is, as well as how deep we are in food industry and street murals!
1. Rain by Falon Mihalic from Falon Land Studio
She was inspired by Houston’s dramatic rainstorms in the summer months. I found this piece so unique and cool, and it's eye-catching as well. What do you think?
2. Travelers by Jessica Rice
It's "a play on the tunnel system down here at the Understory”. - It totally makes sense since Understory is the center point connected to all the five tunnels in Houston downtown. See below for the downtown tunnel map. How awesome is that? This downtown tunnel guide is perfect for any locals or visitors since downtown area is always busy and hard to find parking.
3. Sawyer Yards - Natural Abstraction
Sawyer Yards is a creative community thriving in heart of Houston’s First Ward and it gives us opportunities to appreciate local art and get inspired! Natural Abstraction includes six artists and it gives us space to explore the human connection to natural environments while deepening one’s understanding of “home”.
This public work space literally has everything you need. You can spend your entire day and never have to leave. Especially if you work here, it's even better. From bright lights and spacious area with fast and free Wi-Fi, charging stations, art pieces, games like table tennis, shuffleboard, mini golf, gym, and food hall, there are so many good things about Understory. With the five merged tunnels, you can walk everywhere! This concept reminds me of Brookfield Place in New York City.
Near Understory Food Hall, there are few other food halls you should absolutely plan a visit to.
1. Bravery Chef Hall
Only 5 mins walking distance from Understory, this venue consists five restaurant concepts. It's pretty cool since you will get the dining experience from each chef, respectively.
2. Conservatory Underground Beer Garden & Food Hall
Only 5 mins walking distance from Understory, this beer garden and food hall has a great variety of draft beers. Here, you have food choices such as handcrafted BBQ, Pizza, Vietnamese Pho, Hawaiian Poke with Unlimited Toppings, Wine and sweet desserts!
3. Finn Hall
Only 3 mins from Understory, Finn Hall is the most diverse food hall in Houston with casual dining options like Mexican, Chinese, American, Mediterranean, Vietnamese, and Korean cuisine. Isn't that so awesome? Finn Hall also has a cocktail lounge and swanky bars.
~ The Great Steps Houston
University of Houston students, doesn't this space ^ remind you of Student Center's staircase right in front of Starbucks? Understory's The Great Steps could be a meet up spot, place to chat, read a good book, relax, grab a coffee or lunch with friends, or even perfect for a quick business call or meeting. What a fun idea? To transform plain stairs into a useful space for everyone!
Lastly, for parking, go for metered street parking because the rates at Bank of America garage for visitors are expensive!
Understory Hours: Monday - Thursday 7 AM - 10 PM. Friday 7 AM - 12 AM. Saturday 8 AM - 12 AM. Sunday 8 AM - 10 PM.
