Houston is THE city for restaurants and bars, and if you are looking for chill bars in Houston in midtown & downtown, you are in the right place. Feel free to check these chill bars during the weekends or weekdays. We are so used to going bars late at night, but try going a bit early. Unlike peak times, it might look different with the lights on. Of course, these bars will be way more crowded during weekends. But sometimes, crowded can be fun if you go with group of friends. Let's get right into these 11 chill bars in midtown and downtown Houston.
1. Bungalow Heights
Don't get confused with Cedar Creek which is right next to Bungalow Heights. Bungalow Heights is spacious, chill and perfect for groups. You can also bring few friends, because they have tables for all. Parking is free, you can park right infront. There is an outdoor patio, and during winter, they have heaters outside. Inside Bungalow Heights you will see sofa areas as well as tables. The bar can get a bit crowded but overall chill place to hang out with friends. You might have to yell to each other to talk but it's still very laid back bar in Houston.
2. Clutch Bar
This bar might seem familiar to you if you go bar hopping on Washington during Friday & Saturdays. Houston has a lot of bars around the area but there are certain districts like Washington or Main St where you can go bar hopping. If you like bar hopping, click here for more bars in Houston. Clutch Bar also has food menu available. I tried their loaded nachos and considering the cheap price, the portion was huge. You can probably share with 3-4 people. The food also came out fast in the middle of peak hours which was nice. I normally Lyft or Uber to Clutch Bar because parking around here is bad. But if you decide to drive, parking is cash $20. I think Clutch Bar is a chill bar in Houston to meet up with friends and get the party going.
3. Concrete Cowboy
Concrete Cowboy is another bar in Washington in Houston. Many people including me enjoy this bar because of their music. They normally play electronic music or any relatable songs you can sing along. Unlike Clutch Bar, Concrete Cowboy can be super packed and they have a lot of booths. Probably would feel more like a party scene. If you like dancing or want to meet new people & have fun, this is the bar you should go. While it's super packed, I've never encountered any rude or drunk people, so it's a pass for me.
4. Ohn Korean Eatery
Ohn Korean Eatery is a chill bar with food. It's located in Bellaire area but not in the bubble tea plaza. Ohn Korean Eatery is perfect for big groups or small, since it's a casual bar to drink and eat. The main reason I like it here is because the place is spacious and trendy, and they also sell imported Korean liquor. They also have savory bar food. Most of the food I've tried here are all delicious. Also their soup doesn't taste like unfiltered water unlike some bars in Houston. You cannot make reservations so I'd say during peak hours like 9pm- 12am, you might have to wait if you have more people than 4. Unlike the other bars in this list, you can have a normal conversation all night long without having to yell at each other. Click here for more casual Asian restaurants in Houston.
5. Pitch 25
Pitch 25 is another chill and spacious bar in Houston you want to check out. When you walk in, it's actually nicely decorated and the air feels good. It might feel a bit empty when it's not crowded because it's even more spacious than Bungalow Heights. But at the same time, it's perfect since you have your private space and not constantly bumping into other people. They have an outdoor patio space. Pitch 25 is located around Neil's Bahr, Little Woodrow's & Lucky's Pub but unlike those bars, this bar is more chill and less crowded. Even during the weekends, you can grab several drinks and relax here. If you are looking for a chill bar in houston midtown, try Pitch 25.
6. Miss Carousel
I wanted to visit this place because of their stunning interior. If you come here around 6-7pm, you might be able to take photo of the interior because it won't be as dark. Miss Carousel is located few minutes from Pitch 25. This bar is also surround by downtown Houston bars like, Chapman & Kirby, 8th Wonder Brewery, & Truck Yard. Miss Carousel is pretty spacious, and the bar feels like a loft style. In the front they have the bar with tables & sofas, and at the back, they have a restaurant. Their drinks are pretty good and while it's crowded, you have your own space which makes it chill. Great for both groups and night out with few friends.
7. Truck Yard
If you like beer gardens like Axelrad, you would probably like Truck Yard. This bar is also super spacious, and they have both outdoors and indoors. For the outdoors, they have a lot more going on, like areas to play games, take photos, watch sports and eat at different food trucks in the middle. Their interior is unique, ceiling covered by Truck Yard license plates and art. They have this colorful carousel as well. Truck Yard is definitely chill beer garden in Houston. Pets are allowed as well.
8. 77 Degrees
This new & rising bar in Houston is a great place for a night out. 77 Degrees is located in midtown Houston next to shot bar, 260 midtown & the dog house tavern. It's more of a lounge than a bar. There's actually a bar called Jack and Gingers, and the 77 Degrees lounge is on top of it. You can easily spot 77 Degrees because of it's cool architecture and beaming lights at night. when you make it to the top, there's a cool spot to see the Houston downtown view. Perfect place to take photos for Instagram. If you are looking for a chill bar, come here a bit early rather than later times. They have sofas and swings to sit down. Just a thought, it would've been even better if they had a pool. I can totally see 77 Degrees throwing a pool party during hot sunny summer.
9. Around The Corner
This bar is few minutes from Miss Carousel & Truck Yard. 5 minutes of walking, and it's "around the corner". This bar is more quiet and relaxed compared to other bars in this list. It's definitely less crowded even during the weekends and cozy as well. Around The Corner is type of bar to go when you want to have a chill night with few close friends or have a good conversation over drinks. They also have this cool station where you can play your own music.
Oakmont is another chill bar in Houston with outdoor yard. It's more like a beer garden just like Truck Yard and Axelrad. Their interior is nicely decorated with high top tables and plenty of bar seating. I didn't go up, but I saw they had second floor as well. It was a pleasant surprise because it wasn't too crowded or anything. Very laid back just like Pitch 25 and they have bar games as well. If you like pizza, try their margherita pizza! This place is also perfect for social events.
11. BlackBird Izakaya
Blackbird Izakaya is a relaxing and chill bar in Houston to grab a quick bite or have good drinks with friends. Located 5 minutes from the bar hopping area, Washington St, Blackbird Izakaya has a lot of delicious asian fusion plates to choose from. Their curry rice is delicious as well as fresh sashimi, gyoza, skewers, and their spaghetti mentai. We ordered so many food from Blackbird Izakaya on this day, and everything was perfect. My favorite was spaghetti mentai, the squid ink spaghetti. You need to try this! Click here for more midtown Houston restaurants.
